Urticaria (hives)
- Hives, medically known as urticaria, is a skin reaction characterised by small, pale or reddened swellings (weals or welts); which "come and go and move around".
- There are many possible causes of hives.
- Hives can last a few minutes, from hours to weeks
(acute cases), or from months to years (chronic urticaria). In acute urticaria
a cause can usually be found, but not in chronic urticaria.
- Treatment is directed toward relief of symptoms and,
if allergens can be identified, elimination thereof.
- Angioedema (swelling of the lips, eyelids) is similar
to hives, but affects a deeper layer of skin.
- On rare occasions, angioedema can be life threatening when hives form in the mouth, throat and airway, blocking the passage of air and posing the risk of suffocation.
