Post-operative pain relief

Advantages of postoperative pain relief

There are several advantages of postoperative pain relief.

How long should pain relief continue?

Surgeons all too often think their patients do not have any pain, and if they have, it does not last longer than a day. If only they would ask their patients!

Types of postoperative pain relief

There are many different ways of providing postoperative pain relief.

Traditional way of post-operative pain relief: Injections of morphine or another opioid

The "traditional" way of postoperative pain relief involves injections of morphine or another opioid.

Pain relief after surgery

Pain causes great discomfort and can be harmful to the patient. It is therefore important to ensure pain relief postoperatively and to continue as long as the patient needs it.

Local anaesthetics of post-operative pain relief, including Nerve Blocks

If the surgery is minor, like removal of a breastlump, infiltration of the surgical area with local anaesthetic will be sufficient analgesia.
