Symptoms associated with the time around the menopause are due to diminishing oestrogen levels as a result of decreasing ovarian function.
Some women go through perimenopause (the transitional period when entering menopause) without suffering from any of the classic symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats. The hot flush takes place as an abrupt and unpredictable experience which may last from 30 seconds to five minutes. At night, the same sensation may occur with associated sweating. However, not experiencing these symptoms does not mean that postmenopausal women will not be affected by the negative results of not having oestrogen later on in life.

Oestrogen is the hormone that helps to protect against the external signs of ageing (skin, nails, hair, teeth, etc.), and is also one of the factors to guard against the development of osteoporosis. However, the beneficial effects regarding the prevention of cardiovascular disease are controversial. When going through menopause, it’s just a matter of time before many women will start experiencing the negative effects of decreased oestrogen levels.
