Menopause - How hormones work
Progesterone
Last updated: Monday, October 04, 2004

Progesterone works together with oestrogen to help regulate the menstrual cycle, as well as preparing a woman’s body for conception and the resulting pregnancy. Oestrogen and progesterone have a team work function when preparing the uterus for the coming embryo: oestrogen causes proliferation of the endometrium (“building the house”), and progesterone changes the proliferated endometrium into a secretory phase (“putting the furniture in”).

>With the onset of menopause, the body’s progesterone levels drop. While during the reproductive years, progesterone formed part of the hormonal control of regular menstruation, the decline of progesterone production at perimenopause contributes to periods becoming irregular. When taking hormone replacement therapy after the onset of menopause, the combination of oestrogen and progesterone can reduce a woman’s risk of developing endometrial cancer.
