Anxiety, irritability, difficulty in concentrating, moodiness or depression may occur. Mood changes and decreased libido (sex drive) may result partially from decreased hormone levels, but may also be due to or exacerbated by having to deal with symptoms such as lack of sleep from night-time hot flushes.

Depression may also be more likely in the years immediately before menopause, but it is unclear whether depression is linked to low oestrogen levels or to stressful lifestyle changes many women face during their 40s and 50s (such as career or marriage pressures, children leaving the home or ageing parents).
What to do
If you feel that you are not coping well, discuss your concerns with your doctor and ask for a referral to a psychologist if necessary. If your doctor feels that you need psychiatric medication, he or shemay prescribe this for you or refer you to a psychiatrist. If your emotional problems are due to perimenopausal symptoms such insomnia as a result of night sweats, HRT may be recommended.
