Rheumatic fever – This is a disease that affects younger people. It arises as a delayed complication of bacterial infection of the throat with streptococci ("strep throat"). The main features of the disease are fever, transient arthritis, red patches on the skin, nodules forming on protuberances like the elbow, involuntary muscle movements and inflammation of the heart muscle, valves and heart membrane. Heart valve damage may become chronic, with long-term heart damage being a possibility.
