The five signs of inflammation

Even one of these signs could point to the presence of inflammation, but it must be remembered that not all five signs have to be present in order to diagnose inflammation. Loss of function, for instance, is usually only present if the joint has been inflamed for an extended period of time.

The five signs of inflammation are:

  • Swelling
  • Warmth
  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Loss of function
