Types of soft tissue rheumatism

Confused about rheumatism? Many sufferers may be unaware that it affects not only inflamed joints, but also inflamed soft tissue. Here’s a short guide to how it works.

Soft tissue rheumatism can

be categorized according to the distribution of the pain and stiffness of your body:

  • If the pain and stiffness are localised to a specific spot such as the elbow (it’s called tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow and its proper name is enthesitis), the heel (Achilles tendonitis), the foot (plantar fasciitis) or shoulder (bursitis), then it’s called localised soft tissue rheumatism;
  • If the pain is restricted to a specific region of your body and is associated with regional trigger points, it’s called myofascial pain syndrome. Generalised aching, stiffness and fatigue aren’t features associated with myofascial pain syndrome.
  • If the pain, aching, stiffness and fatigue are diffuse, and you have multiple tender points on your body, you may suffer from fibromyalgia syndrome, also known as generalized soft tissue rheumatism.
