High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a major
contributor to cardiovascular disease, (stroke, heart attack, heart and kidney
failure, and arteriosclerosis). This, in turn, can increase blood pressure
and a vicious cycle is the end result.

In 90 – 95% of cases, there is no known cause of
hypertension.
However, there are factors that contribute to the
problem, called risk factors.
These risk factors can be divided into three main
categories:
Risk factors that you cannot control
Risk
factors you can control
Existing diseases or organ damage that can also
increase your total risk.
Your doctor will take all these factors into account in
the management plan. It will influence decisions of when to start drug
treatment as well as the choice of medication. Special examinations and regular
follow-up treatment will be needed to optimise your health.
