What is the difference between GORD and heartburn?
Last updated: Tuesday, October 19, 2004
GORD is a disease, and heartburn is its most common symptom. Everyone who gets occasional heartburn certainly does not have GORD. Heartburn is a burning sensation behind the breastbone. This sensation is caused by the reflux of acid into the oesophagus. It is only when heartburn becomes so frequent that it is disruptive that one can assume that GORD has developed.
