Recommendations for Influenza Vaccine Composition
It is recommended that vaccines to be used in the 2006 season (southern hemisphere winter) contain the following:
1. An A/California/7/2004(H3N2) - like strain
2. An A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1) - like strain
3. A B/Malaysiai/2506/2004 - like strain

These are strains currently recommended by WHO and The National Health Authority for SA in 2006. The New Caledonia strain is exactly the same as the one used since 2002. The A/California strain has replaced the A/Wellington strain and the B/Malaysia strain has replaced the B/Shanghai strain.

Vaccines for the 2005 season (southern hemisphere winter) contained the following:
1. An A/Wellington/1/2004(H3N2) - like strain
2. An A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1) - like strain
3. A B/Shanghai/361/2002 - like strain

Vaccines for the 2004 season (southern hemisphere winter) contained the following:
1. An A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1) -like virus
2. An A/Fujian/411/2002(H3N2) - like virus (A/Kumamoto/102/2002 and A/Wyoming/3/2003 are egg-grown A/Fujian/411/2002-like viruses)
3. A B/Hong Kong/330/2001-like virus (Currently used vaccine viruses include B/Shandong/7/97, B/Hong Kong/330/2001, B/Hong Kong/1434/2002. B/Brisbane/32/2002 is also available as a vaccine virus.)

Vaccines for the 2004-2005 season (northern hemisphere winter) contained the following:
1. An A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1)-like virus
2. An A/Fujian/411/2002(H3N2)-like virus (The currently used vaccine virus is A/Wyoming/3/2003. A /Kumamoto/102/2002 is also available as a vaccine virus).
3. A B/Shanghai/361/2002-like virus (Candidate vaccine viruses include B/Shanghai/361/2002 and B/Jilin/20/2003 which is a B/Shanghai/361/2002-like virus).
(Note that only the third, less virulent strain, differs slightly from the SA vaccine. This means that the SA vaccine may be effective in Europe as well.)

Vaccines for the 2003 season (southern hemisphere winter) contained the following:
1. An A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1)-like virus
2. An A/Moscow/10/99(H3N2)-like virus (The widely used vaccine strain is A/Panama/2007/99)
3. A B/Hong Kong/330/2001-like virus (Some currently used vaccine strains are B/Shandong/7/97, B/Hong Kong/330/2001, B/Hong Kong/1434/2002).

Vaccines for the 2002 season (southern hemisphere winter) contained the following:
1. An A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1)-like virus
2. An A/Moscow/10/99(H3N2)-like virus (The widely used vaccine strain is A/Panama/2007/99)
3. A B/Sichuan/379/99-like virus (B/Guangdong/120/2000, B/Johannesburg/5/99 and B/Victoria/504/2000 are B/Sichuan/379/99-like viruses, which have been used for vaccine production.)
