Cancer of the colon is common in Western countries, where it appears to be related to a diet high in animal proteins and fats and low in fibre. It’s a good idea to be aware of the signs and symptoms – early detection could save your life. And it’s Colorectal Awareness Month, after all.

The following symptoms should always be investigated: change in regular bowel habit (e.g. constipation or diarrhoea); bright red blood in the stools; black stools (also indicative of the presence of blood); abdominal discomfort, including colic, bloating and fullness; vomiting; weight loss; and fatigue.
