Overview

Breast cancer is a general term for different types of cancer that develop from breast tissue cells. The causes of breast cancer are mostly unknown and may include several genetic, environmental, nutritional and hormonal factors. Symptoms of breast cancer are not obvious in the early stages and any changes in the breast should be monitored, especially if there are breast lumps, changes in nipple appearance, swelling under the arm or unusual nipple discharge. Cancer of the breast is not just a female problem and more and more often there are reports of male breast cancer too. The treatment of breast cancer depends on the clinical stage of the cancer, the pathological type, as well as the patient’s age and wishes, but can include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, lumpectomy and a mastectomy. Even though currently breast cancer cannot be prevented, it can be diagnosed much earlier than before. Early diagnosis of breast cancer is possible with routine mammography and early biopsy of suspicious lesions. Early detection of breast cancer is key.
