Anaesthesia - About Anaesthesia
Types of anaesthesia and your choice
Last updated: Tuesday, November 14, 2006
When you need an operation there is often a choice of what sort of anaesthetic is needed to enable the surgeon to perform the operation.

If the operation is on the surface of your body, a local anaesthetic may do the job. If the operation is a larger one for example, and is on one of your limbs, a nerve block to the area of the operation may be all that is necessary.

Taking it further, the operation may involve something more complicated such as a hip or knee replacement when a spinal or epidural may be the best option.

Conscious sedation, a very light form of anaesthesia where you don’t lose consciousness, is also becoming increasingly popular. This type of anaesthesia can be used for different types of procedures, from dental procedures to plastic surgery.

Finally, there may be a reason why none of these can be used, and the best option is a general anaesthetic.

You, your surgeon and your anaesthetist must decide on the best method for your operation.
