Anaesthesia - More on anaesthesia
Day clinics and outpatient anaesthesia
Last updated: Monday, September 13, 2004

Some operations are relatively minor and do not need to be carried out in a hospital operating theatre. The actual anaesthetic follows the same lines as any other anaesthetic, except that your anaesthetist will use drugs that a very short acting and leave you without a hangover.

You will be admitted to the clinic on the day of the operation, and you should carefully follow the rules about fasting. You should complete the pre-operative admission form with medical history in some detail, so that your anaesthetist has full knowledge of your condition.

After the operation you will find that you are wide-awake very soon after the anaesthetic. You should not be discharged if you cannot stand without dizziness, cannot walk unassisted, or if you have pain or nausea.
