Alzheimer's & Dementia - Memory techniques
Phraseology
Last updated: Tuesday, November 06, 2007
Phraseology especially helps to remember lists of words. Why is it called phraseology? Because you build phrases that help you remember lists of words.

List the words that you would like to remember and try to put together a catchy phrase with the first letter of each word.

For instance, how would you go about remembering the colours (in the correct order) of the rainbow? Well, for starters you need to know the colours in the correct order. Here we go: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Before you read on try to think up your own phrase ... A well-known British phrase for this task is: Richard Of York Gives Battle In Vain.

You can also reduce long-winded sentences and paragraphs to words with chunking and organisation (see below) and then draw on phraseology.

Written by Dr Frans Hugo, MBChB, M.Med Psychiatry and Dr L. Van Wyk, MBChB, M. Med (Psych) from the Panorama Memory Clinic.
