Cancer of the cervix is a very common malignant disease in South African women.
What is cancer of the cervix?
The cervix, also called neck of the womb, is the lower, narrow part of the uterus (womb).
Who gets cancer of the cervix and who is at risk?
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women, comprising 16.6% of all cancers.
How is a woman examined for cervical cancer and its precursors?
By performing a gynaecological examination and taking a Pap smear, the doctor with the help of the laboratory can detect abnormal changes at the cervix.
What is the outcome of cancer of the cervix?
The outlook for women with pre-cancerous changes of the cervix or very early cancer of the cervix is excellent; nearly all patients with these conditions can be cured.
Cervical cancer: when to see a doctor
For the early detection of cancer precursors, women should see their doctor to have a Pap smear at regular intervals
Combating cervical cancer
Cervical cancer was once the leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Today, because of ever-more effective screening methods, this cancer is being detected - and cured.
Millions die from cervical cancer
Almost a quarter million women die from cervical cancer each year although the disease is largely preventable, the U.N. health agency said.
