It is difficult to determine the infection rate of HPV in South Africa, but about 100 000 to 200 000 new cases are found every year. Infection rates of five percent to 10 percent are common among young adults. Sophisticated analysis finds HPV DNA (genetic material) in the cells of 25 percent to 50 percent of all patients attending gynaecology clinics.
