Every household should have a well-stocked first aid kit. You can buy one from organisations such as St John’s Ambulance, or you can make up your own. Keep one in your home and one in your car. Make sure that you know how to use the items and what they are used for.

Take action: The basic first aid kit should contain at least the following: 3 x roller bandages (50 mm); 3 x roller bandages (7 mm); 2 x triangular bandages; gauze dressing: 1 dry and 1 paraffin-coated; 1 bottle of Dettol or Savlon (50 ml); 2 x small, medium and large wound dressings; 1 roll adhesive tape (1 m x 2.5 cm); 1 pair of bandage scissors; safety pins; tweezers; 1 burn dressing; 1 tube of antiseptic ointment; 1 pair of disposable gloves; 1 mouthpiece for administering CPR; 1 packet of assorted plasters; 1 ice pack; paracetamol, such as Panado; calamine lotion; tea tree oil; arnica oil; aloe vera and propolis cream; a thermometer; rehydration fluid, such as Rehidrat, and measuring spoons.
