First Aid - The basics
A travel first-aid kit
Last updated: Thursday, March 20, 2008
The contents of a travel first-aid kit depend on the destination. If you're going abroad, find out whether the country you are travelling to has any restrictions regarding the type and amount of medication you may carry. Some European countries, for example, have restrictions on medication containing codeine.

If you travel to a remote area, it may be helpful to take some medications with you, in addition to the first aid kit. Speak to your pharmacist. Some of the medications require a prescription.

  • Malaria tablets
  • Water sterilisation tablets
  • Anti-diarrhoea medication such as Imodium
  • Nausea and vomiting medication such as Valoid, Stugeron or Avomine
  • Flu medication and cough syrup
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, such as Myprodol
  • Antihistamine tablets such as Phenergan or Tavegyl
  • Broad-spectrum antibiotics
  • Sleeping pills if you battle to sleep in the aeroplane
  • Ointment containing acyclovir for fever blisters
  • Lip balm and sun screen
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Disposable aluminium foil blanket (available from outdoor and camping shops)
  • Moleskin blister plasters
  • Snake bite kit if you're going to be in very remote areas
  • Sufficient amounts of prescription medication required by anyone in your group.
