Preparing for your trip
Make sure your shoes are well worn in and appropriate for the activities that you plan to participate in. Do not take new shoes along that have never been worn.
Have any foot complaints dealt with by your podiatrist before you leave.
We often do a lot more walking on holiday than normal. A day of sightseeing in London can be an exhausting experience! Try to get into shape before your holiday. This is especially important if you plan to participate in any sporting activities or hiking.
Pack a small first aid kit for emergencies.
Getting there: Economy class syndrome
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition. It happens when a blood clot (thrombosis) that forms in the deep vein system of the leg, most commonly between ankle and upper calf. The clot can detach from the wall of the vein, travel through the veins and lodge in the lungs or heart, causing sudden death.
There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that we are more at risk of developing DVT while flying due to cramped conditions and inactivity, hence the name “Economy class Syndrome”. In order to protect yourself from (DVT) while flying the following steps should be taken:
Wear a pair of graduated compression socks. These “flight socks” prevent pooling of blood in the secondary vein system and help achieve proper blood flow back to the heart and lungs.
Drink plenty of water while flying.
Get up and walk around to stimulate the circulation in the lower leg.
Foot care while on holiday
Walking barefoot exposes the feet to viral, fungal and bacterial infections. Take care not to walk barefoot in dirty areas.
Apply plenty of sun block to the upper surfaces of the foot. These areas are normally protected by shoes and are susceptible to sunburn.
Treat your feet after walking long distances or standing for long periods of time. A foot massage or keeping them elevated will repair the damage!
Use your common sense. A small cut or abrasion to the feet at home may not be cause for alarm but can develop into a potentially serious condition while traveling. Treat any lesions immediately and if in doubt, contact a medical practitioner.
