Osteoporosis - Health tips
Weekly tip - Better bones with high-fibre foods
Last updated: Tuesday, May 23, 2006
Teens may cut their risk of developing osteoporosis later in life by eating more fibre-rich foods, according to the latest research. Fibre-rich foods are a source of prebiotics, non-digestible food substances which act as food for probiotics – the "good" bacteria that live in your gastro-intestinal tract.

Take action:
While more research needs to be done before definite recommendations can be made, researchers say that this should be one more good reason to include fibre in your diet. Fruits, veggies and whole-grains are good sources of dietary fibre. Foods that have particularly good prebiotic properties include chicory, onion, asparagus, rye, banana and oats. Make a point of eating more of these foods and combine them with probiotic-rich foods, like yoghurt, sauerkraut and tempeh, to make the most of their beneficial properties.
