Osteoporosis is a ‘silent’ or asymptomatic disease until complicated by fracture.
The symptoms of osteoporosis generally result from fractures that have occurred because of the condition. The most common sites of fracture are the hip, vertebrae, wrist, humerus (upper arm) and tibia (lower leg).

The most common symptoms resulting from osteoporosis of the spine are pain and back deformity (the Dowager’s hump). This may be sudden, after bending or lifting or jumping.
The hip is usually fractured after a fall, as are the other bones mentioned.
Chronic vertebral fracture leads to chronic back pain.
Recurrent episodes of collapsed vertebrae (which increase the deformity of the spine and decrease height) are common. However, there may be intervals of several years between fractures.
