Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is one of the most common ways of treating osteoporosis, but it is not suitable for all women. Oestrogen does increase bone mass to some degree and may reduce osteoporotic fractures of the spine and hip in women who have been using HRT for more than five years. Women who may not take HRT are those who have had breast cancer, or who have had a family history of breast cancer, endometriosis and thrombosis. Recent research has supported the use of HRT for the treatment of osteoporosis, but not as a long-term solution.
