The different groups of painkillers
Last updated: Friday, October 19, 2007
Painkillers (analgesics) can generally be classified in three main categories:

1. Paracetamol
Well known brands are Panado, Tylenol and Dafalgan. The maximum dose is 4 gr per day for adults. If one should combine two different types of paracetamol, one could easily exceed the recommended daily dosage.

2. NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
NSAIDs include diclofenac (Voltaren) and ibuprofen (Brufen). NSAIDs should never be combined with other NSAIDs, including aspirin. Doing this would increase the risk for side effects without increasing the efficacy of the medication.

3. Opioids
Well known opioids include codeine and morphine. Different opioids should not be combined, as this increases the risk for possible side effects without increasing the efficacy of the medication.

Local anaesthetics, Nerve blocks and Epidurals
Local anaestheticsa (including nerve blocks) and epidurals can also be used for pain relief. Local anaesthetics include lignocaine, bupivicaine and Ropivacaine.
