A sustainable medical scheme
Last updated: Tuesday, October 23, 2007
Sustainability of member benefits is the driving factor behind Fedhealth’s 2008 average rate increase of 12,9%. This responsible increase will allow the scheme to live up to it’s member-focused philosophy of providing Real Medical Aid, and will ensure consistency and sustainable performance – all key factors in the scheme’s commitment and service to members.

This increase also allows the scheme to maintain the range of benefits offered to members, many of which are unique to Fedhealth, and which add substantial value. These benefits include:

  • Unlimited hospitalisation at 300 % of NHRPL on all options

  • Cover for 56 chronic conditions on all options, up to 70 on some

  • MRI and CT scans, emergency treatment in a casualty ward and oral contraception all paid from risk, not Savings

  • Option upgrades in cases of life-changing events, including diagnosis of a chronic condition, at anytime during the year
  • Interest-free loans for certain reconstructive and cosmetic procedures

  • Holistic disease management programmes

  • Child rates for financially dependent children up to the age of 27

Determining an annual rate increase is based on claim patterns, possible member movements between options, medical inflation, healthcare costs and reserve building, or - in Fedhealth’s case - reserve maintenance. All these factors determine an increase that ensures that our members continue to receive meaningful benefits without compromising long term sustainability.
