Fedhealth grew out of the former Reef Medical Aid when – in 1994 – the scheme’s administrator was acquired by Fedsure Holdings (Fedsure).

Fedsure Health was relaunched as Fedhealth in 2001, and the administration was transferred to Medscheme, the largest medical scheme administrator in South Africa.

The scheme has many different options,from full medical cover, to hospital plans. These include the Fedhealth Ultimax, the Fedhealth Ultima 300, the Fedhealth Ultima 200, the Fedhealth Ultima Core, the Fedhealth Ultima Access R5000 (Prime Cure), the Fedhealth Medway Maxima Plus, Fedhealth Maxima Standard, Fedhealth Medway Maxima Core.

Other benefits offered by Fedhealth
In addition to the normal risk and day-to-day benefits, Fedhealth also offers a range of extra benefits to add value to their products. These benefits include:

  • 30-day Post-hospitalisation benefit
    Post-hospitalisation is paid from risk, and includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, radiology and pathology, X-rays and oxygen. This benefit excludes medication or treatment such as painkillers, sleeping pills, bandages crutches or wheelchairs. Take-home medication prescribed in hospital are paid for up to seven days after discharge, from the in-hospital benefit.
  • Cover for professional sports and hazardous pursuits
    Injuries resulting from participation in
    • Aviation, other that as a fare paying passenger
    • Motorcar racing, motorcycle racing, power boat racing and other competitive or professional sports
    • Hazardous pursuits, for example, mountaineering, bungee jumping, skydiving, scuba diving, hunting, motorcycling
  • Specialised radiology
    MRI and CT scans are covered from the in-hospital benefit, irrespective of whether the procedure is performed in or out of hospital, providing pre-authorisation has been obtained
  • Child dependant status up to age 27
    Fedhealth will charge the child dependant rate for children stull studying or dependant on their parent (principal member) up to age 27
  • Disease Management Programmes
    Fedhealth offers holistic treatment programmes for members suffering serious diseases such as HIV/Aids
  • Europ Assistance
    Fedhealth members may access a range of emergency services through Europ Assistance, including
    • Ambulance transfer and/or emergency evacuation
    • Transfer of life saving medication and emergency blood
    • Repatriation of mortal remains
    • Emotional support and telecounselling
  • Emergency treatment
    Fedhealth pays for outpatient emergency treatment in the casualty ward from the risk benefit, in case of
    • Trauma; physical injury to the body as a result of external force, that requires immediate attention
    • Life-threatening situations that require immediate admission into hospital after treatment in the casualty ward
    • Providing the Authorisation Centre has been informed of the situation within 24 hours after treatment in Casualty or hospitalisation
  • Free International Travel Medical insurance up to R10 million
    Members and their dependants are covered for up to R10-million per family per journey for all emergency medical expenses, their related expenses, repatriation and transportation while traveling outside of SA.
  • Fedhealth Baby
    Fedhealth offers a free managed care programme that offers expectant mothers a complete maternity solution, which focuses on the wellness and health of both mother and baby, during pregnancy and birth
    • A complimentary pack of baby products welcoming them to the programme
    • Discounts on ante-natal classes at Stork’s Nest
    • A 24-hour medical advice line manned by midwives
    • Regular newsletters during pregnancy and after the birth
    • Breastfeeding consultations through Stork’s Nest
