Presented by Harmony Cycle Club WP, the MEDIHELP Criterium cycle race in aid of the Jan Kriel School will take place at 13:00 on Saturday 24 May. The excitement of a criterium cycle race provides the public with the opportunity to be part of the action. The mass start, high-speed cornering and sprinting make for excellent spectator value. Because riders in a criterium pass the same point each lap, spectators have the opportunity to follow the leaders, or perhaps a friend or family member, closely.

A criterium cycle race is defined as a short road cycle race on a circuit, usually streets closed to traffic. The distance per lap may vary, but is usually not longer than 5 km. Races consist of a varying number of laps. Cyclists refer to such a race as serious racing, because the athlete's fitness level, power output, technical skills and ability to position him/ or herself strategically so that he/she will always be in the right spot at the right time.
League riders will compete in their relative categories and will start after the open category. The elite men's race will start at 16:15.
Funriders seldom have the opportunity to take part in a criterium. A unique feature of this event will be the fact that funriders will have a chance to test their skills on the track. Under normal circumstances riders are eliminated as soon as they are lapped by the leader. However, In this case, all funriders will be allowed to finish the race and ride until the leader crosses the finish line.
The circuit will follow Bill Bezuidenhout, Carl Cronjé Drive, Mispel Road and Willie van Schoor Avenue. To ensure cyclists' safety and no traffic disruption, the circuit will be coned off. Motorists are requested not to use Mispel Road from Carl Cronjé Road as the road opposite Starlight Diner is quite narrow.
Title sponsor MEDIHELP is one of the five largest medical schemes in South Africa. More than R6 000 in prize money will be up for grabs with the winner in the elite men's category taking home R1 200.
