British researchers have identified a gene that could cause people to overeat, BBC News Online reports.
The GAD2 gene causes production of a chemical - gamma-amino butyric acid - that increases a person's appetite, say scientists at Imperial College London. But in their findings, published in the Public Library of Science Biology, the researchers caution that although their research is significant, obesity cannot be explained by a single factor.

Experts tell the BBC that scientists are currently investigating some 250 genes that may be linked to obesity.
In any case, the researchers say their study of more than 1 200 people could lead to a screening programme to identify people who risk becoming obese later in life. – (HealthDayNews)
