Bed rest can cause back pain

Lower back pain has long been connected to hard work and heavy lifting. But extended periods of bed rest can also bring it on.

And here's why, in case you ever wondered. Muscles have large movements and small ones, says the European Journal of Medical Research. But when people are immobilised, the muscles can only make tiny movements. That, researchers say, can lead to muscle cramping and lower back pain.

So the standard treatment for lower back pain from too much exercise is bed rest.

And the treatment for back pain from bed rest? You guessed it: exercise.
