Dr G. D'Andrea and colleagues at the University of Parma in Italy documented a case of a 36-year-old woman who suddenly began to experience blurred vision on the right or left side, flickering lines and circles of light after orgasm.
Migraines are characterised by intense pain, sensitivity to light and sometimes auras – flashes of light or visual blank spots.
The International Headache Society recognises three types of sexual headaches, one of which is a sudden, severe headache appearing after or during orgasm. The researchers believe that the women's symptoms appear to fit this type of headache, however, there are some differences.
This type of migraine is more commonly seen in men, and the pain is usually felt on both sides of the head.
Nevertheless, after the woman recovered after being treated with the drug lamotrigine, the researchers report in the August issue of the journal Cephalalgia.
No explanation of cause While the researchers could not explain the cause of the orgasm-induced migraine, they were pleased with the effectiveness of lamotrigine in treating and preventing the migraines. – (Health24)
