Headache & Migraine - Headaches and Sex
No, dear, I have a headache
Last updated: Tuesday, February 10, 2004
It is no secret that a lack of interest in sex can lead to marital problems. What causes this?

There are no hard and fast rules about what consititutes a normal libido, but most women become aware of a lessening interest in sex when it happens to them. Initially, most people have a healthy interest in sex, but there are many reasons why this can suddenly decrease.

Reasons for reduced interest in sex
Hormonal problems. These might be accompanied by weight changes, irregular periods, hair growth of hair loss.

Childbirth. This can often lead to a reduced interest in sex, as a result of fluctuating hormone levels, disturbed nights and the fact that women tend to see their baby, rather than their husband, as a priority – for the first few months at least.

Long-term illness and lack of energy. If a woman is tired or ill, the body tends to conserve its energy for activities other than sex.

Psychologically distressing past experiences. Often therapy can help someone deal with these, but past experiences can definitely impact on present sexual activities.

A lack of feeling for your partner. If your partner fails to excite you or you feel that he is insensitive to your needs, it can have an impact on your sexual appetite.

Stress, worry and depression. When you are preoccupied with something else, your body diverts its energy to deal with the problem at hand and sexual desire takes a back seat.

Getting medical help
Your doctor can do blood tests to find out if your have an iron shortage or some other underlying cause. A hormone imbalance can also be detected by the doctor. A doctor can also refer your for counselling if your lack of interest in sex is related to some distressing past experiences.

Things you can do
Eat nutritious foods. These can include bread, milk, eggs, meat, chicken, nuts, beans, dried fruit and fish.

Cut down your alcohol intake. Alcohol cancels out many of the good nutrients you may be consuming.

Lose weight. Not only will this make you feel better about yourself, but could improve your hormone function.

Regular physical exercise. This elevates your mood and can have a positive effect on your hormones and energy levels.

Make a plan to take time out with your partner. This is essential as work and children can easily sap you of your strength and sexual interest.

Take a good multivitamin. This could improve your general sense of health, as well as help you with PMS.
