"I never gambled with a budget. I continuously lost all my paychecks from work. I always anticipated paydays. Did I ever win? Yes. But you lose more money than you win," writes a Reddit user explaining how gambling went from a pastime activity to a full-blown addiction.

"It’s a proven fact for me. An addict can never win enough. You have the need to win bigger. That’s where the problem starts."

This week, closer to home, a man known as @NykoMR went online on social platform X to share how his mother's account was cleaned out – something the X user initially blamed on her banking service provider.
