When I first heard about the Allurion Balloon, I was intrigued. The procedure involves a balloon, which is swallowed and then filled with saline once it reaches the stomach. The goal here is to reduce the amount of food consumed by filling up part of the stomach, resulting in weight loss.

"I was very fortunate to be the first doctor in South Africa to have placed this balloon," says Dr Luhard Janse van Vuuren during a Zoom chat. "At this stage, we are only a few doctors who are accredited to do it."

Growing up in a medical family, Janse van Vuuren knew he was destined to be a doctor. He lights up when discussing his career, excited about the positive impact he has made on the lives of his patients.
