Last updated: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 PrintWhat is happening to your baby:
- The baby is about 2cm long (the size of a small bean) and weighs about 1 gram.
- The face changes almost daily. Dark spots appear where the eyes and nostrils will be and indentations for the ears.
- Buds that will become the arms and legs are more noticeable.
- The internal organs – the lungs, digestive system and excretory system – form.
- Growth of the pituitary gland and muscle fibres.
- Pancreas and bronchi grow.
- Heart has divided into chambers.
- The testes or ovaries have formed.
The embryo makes its first movements but you won’t be able to feel them at this stage.
What is happening to you:
You may be concerned about having a miscarriage as this can easily happen during the embryonic period. Miscarriages are usually caused by inadequate development of the placenta, the umbilical cord and/or the embryo. Poor health and nutrition of the mother or the intake of toxic substances may also lead to a miscarriage. (Learn more about miscarriage in the section: Complications)
What to do:
- Discuss your concerns about miscarriage with your doctor.
- Make sure that you eat properly. (See Suggested diet during pregnancy in our Nutrition Section)
