Falling pregnant and having a baby is the most wonderful miracle on earth. Pregnancy is also the one time in a woman’s life when she should be in perfect health, as there are a number of conditions that can potentially harm the growing baby or its mother.

“It is important that you should follow a balanced diet, drink enough water, take your vitamin and mineral supplements and do regular mild exercises,” says Prof Dion du Plessis, Netcare’s Medical Director. He warns, however, that the two most common conditions to avoid when pregnant are high/low blood pressure and high/low blood sugar levels (diabetes).
“These two conditions can easily develop during pregnancy and could be life-threatening if not identified and treated early,” explains Prof Du Plessis. “Even though you may not be experiencing any symptoms associated with abnormal high blood pressure or abnormal blood sugar levels, it is best to have yourself screened.”
Free screening In support of Pregnancy Awareness Week, running from 17 February, the Netcare Group of companies will be hosting free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings. Expectant mothers who visit to a Netcare hospital, Medicross or Prime Cure medical centre for a screening will also receive free copies of Your Pregnancy magazine, a free Netcare and Baby City Baby Development calendar, free healthcare advice and gifts and special offers.
The Netcare private hospital group has become renowned for its Stork’s Nest maternity service that offers a comprehensive range of medical services and advice to expectant and new mothers.
“Netcare hospitals with a Stork’s Nest Clinics also offer various of their usual services, such as 3D live scans, ante-natal courses, first aid kits, nanny courses and Netcare Baby Gift bags at discounted rates. These clinics typically also provide services such as immunisations, milestone and development tracking, baby weighing and breastfeeding consultations along with advice about just about any topic regarding pregnancy and babies,” says Nellie Koen, National Coordinator for Netcare’s Storks Nest.
“We would like to invite all expectant mothers to visit our facilities and acquire some essential knowledge about their pregnancy and imminent motherhood,” says Koen. “Your local Netcare hospital, Medicross or Prime Cure Centre will be able to provide you with information on exactly what services they will be offering during this promotion.”
