Recent incidents of new-born babies being swopped in hospitals have made many a parent sit up straight. You can prevent this from happening to you.
Take action:
If you're the father/partner, accompany your new-born to the maternity ward. Make sure that your baby is registered in the maternity ward and that all the necessary forms are signed with the hospital. The baby should receive a number that connects him/her to the mother. Make sure that this number is put on two tags: one that goes around the baby's ankle, and another that is attached to the arm. Another numbered tag should be taped to the baby's body, where it is clearly visible (in case the tags fall off

). Check all numbers and make sure that they correlate with each other. Also check for marks that will help you to identify your child, e.g. a birth mark.
NOTE: If you're not convinced that the hospital follows the correct procedure, don't let the baby out of your sight until he/she has been properly tagged.
