Changing a disposable nappy
Preparing your baby

Lay the baby down on its back on a flat surface. Detach the nappy tabs, and lift the baby’s bottom by gently holding its ankles and raising it upwards.

Slide the used nappy out from under the baby, and place nearby, out of the baby’s reach.

Clean the genitals and anus thoroughly with a baby washcloth, or with cotton balls with warm water. Alcoholic wet-wipes may induce a rash or skin irritation on babies younger than 2 months.

For baby girls, wipe from the front to the back to avoid bacterial infection of the vagina. For baby boys, cover the penis with a small cloth while cleaning, to avoid spray if the baby urinates.

Open up the new diaper, making sure the tabs are facing the correct way. Most modern disposables will have coloured instructions to help you with this.

Place any used cleaning supplies in the soiled nappy. When you are finished cleaning, fold the nappy up with all used supplies inside, wrap the nappy up and secure with tabs. Dispose of the nappy in a diaper pail or in a dustbin.
