 Stages of labour
How will you be sure that your labour has really started? Knowing the signs to look for will help you feel more relaxed and better equipped to cope when the real thing finally kicks in.

If labour has started, you will go through three distinctive phases - from the first stage with slow, infrequent contractions, through the difficult second phase, to the final stage which brings relief but can be hazardous. Have a look at what you could expect when in labour.

01. First stage of labour
The first stage starts out slowly with short, infrequent contractions of the uterus. Over a period of hours or days, the contractions become stronger and come closer together.

02. Second stage of labour
The baby manoeuvres itself through the pelvis by rotating and slowly appearing from the birth canal. Most women become very focused and clearheaded. The contractions feel very different.

This is a stage of relief but could potentially be hazardous.
