The three-day event is essentially a combination of the dressage, cross country and showjumping events.
The showjumping and cross-country parts of this event abide by the normal procedures. This takes place over a 20-30 km course divided into four sections: warm-up, a steeplechase of 3105-3450 m (3105 m in Sydney) scattered with eight to 10 obstacles (nine in Sydney), another warm-up and a cross-country of 6480-7980 m (7,4 km in Sydney) with 35 obstacles.
