Finger sprains commonly occur in ball sports when the ball bounces off the tip of your finger. A ligament gets torn or stretched, and this causes pain, swelling and tenderness, according to the University of Michigan Health System.

Here are some home-treatment tips:
Apply ice to your finger for 20-30 minutes every four hours for two or three days until the pain goes away.
Use a pillow to elevate your hand.
Take an anti-inflammatory medication.
Do exercises to strengthen your finger, such as lifting up each finger individually and holding it for five seconds. Another good exercise is to make a fist and hold for five seconds. Repeat this 10 times.
