In commemoration of the original 1983 “Marathon Man” guinea pig study, where complete novices trained to run their first full marathon (42,2 km), the Sports Science Institute of SA (SSISA) introduces their next training project.

The SSISA, in conjunction with the Two Oceans Race Organising Committee and Old Mutual, is hosting a series of workshops that aim to help runners realise one of the following three goals: to run the Old Mutual Two Oceans Half-Marathon (21,1 km), the Puma Peninsula Marathon (42,2 km) or the Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (56 km). These road races are scheduled for February and March 2005.
The second of the three workshops takes place on Monday, January 24, at 18h30, and will provide runners with essential training tips. A major drawing card is running guru, Professor Tim Noakes, who will discuss the important role of the mind. Well-known Old Mutual Virtual Coach, Dave Spence, will provide participants with a training programme detailing daily workouts right up to race day. SSISA- associated dietician, Jenny-Ann Smuts, will address common dietary questions asked by runners.
The third and final workshop is scheduled for Monday, 14 March, at 18h30. Dave Spence will give final training preparations for ultra- and half-marathon runners. Race organiser Chet Sainsbury will provide a detailed explanation of running the route. Finally, rugby legend Francois Pienaar will give a motivational talk.
The workshops are only R20 (all proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity) and take place at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa, Boundary Rd, Newlands.
Lucky draws are to be held at the end of each workshop and a grand lucky draw will be held at the final workshop for those who attend all three workshops.
