The Natal Rugby Union has gone into partnership with Discovery Health in a bid to reduce the number of rugby injuries at all levels of the game in the province.
The Sharks intend to establish a solid rugby injury prevention programme, to be known as SharksSmart, for players at school, club, amateur and professional levels.

It is based on the New Zealand ACC programme by which it is hoped to minimise the risk of injury in organised rugby. It includes the screening of players, the provision of suitable protective equipment, strength training and the supply of educational material on hydration and nutrition.
Enormous spin-off
The partnership is initially set for three years and from all accounts will help promote the image of the interests of both organisations in the long term.
The spin-off of the plan for rugby fitness awareness is enormous and will be of great encouragement to parents whose sons (and daughters) are considering a career in the game. At least they will be reasonably satisfied in the knowledge that the threat of injury, no matter at what level, will now be countered by the very best medical support available to one and all. – (Sapa)
