Researchers in the UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the Sports Science Institute are conducting a study to examine the interaction between running, diet and bone mineral density.

Who qualifies for the study?
White runners with a running mileage of more than 50 kilometres a week or more than five hours a week
21 to 45 years of age
And one of the following:
A history of menstrual dysfunction/irregular menstrual cycles (less than nine menstrual cycles per year)
Current menstrual dysfunction
A body mass index of less than 18.5
You are not eligible if you are:
Currently using the oral contraceptive pill
Pregnant
Menopausal or post-menopausal
Testing will take place on two separate days for about 2½ hours on each day.
Tests will include:
Accurate body composition including body fat and muscle mass and bone density determination using DEXA (state of the art scan)
Full dietary analysis by a qualified dietician
Monitoring heart rate for seven days
Measurement of certain bone markers in the blood
