At present, the South African Health and Fitness industry is a relatively ill-defined entity. While there is some idea of the facilities and service providers available in the larger, multi-purpose gyms and health clubs, the smaller, single-purpose clubs, community-based organisations and self-employed fitness instructors remain a poorly defined grey area.

With the recent national drive to improve the health of our nation by increasing the levels of physical activity of the general population, it is important to know what health and fitness facilities there are in South Africa, the level of qualification of the service providers in this industry and whether or not the recreational physical activity needs of the average South African are being met.
With these objectives in mind, the UCT/MRC Research unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine (ESSM), on behalf of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa and with the backing of THETA (the national Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Education and Training Authority), is conducting a research survey to investigate the state of the South African Health and Fitness industry.
So, if you own a health or fitness facility or are a service provider in this rapidly expanding industry, please assist us by logging on to www.ssisa.com and clicking on the link to the Health and Fitness Industry questionnaire.
