| A hip pointer injury is a bruise to the crest of the pelvis. It can be an extremely painful and debilitating injury because there is not much padding between the skin and the bones beneath. It is also an area where many muscles attach and these muscles also get damaged, making movement very painful.
Causes
Hip pointers are the result of a direct blow to the hip, whether from a direct hit or a hard fall. Hip pointers are common injuries among rugby players, as they often cannot use their arms to break their falls as the dive to make a save.
Symptoms
- Pain and tenderness at the top of the hip
What you can do
- Apply RICE: rest - slows down bleeding and reduces the risk of further damage; Ice - eases pain, reduces swelling, reduces bleeding initially; compression - reduces bleeding and swelling; elevation - reduces bleeding and swelling by allowing fluids to flow away from the site of injury.
- Do not return too quickly to activity
