Willemse is a powerful wing, with natural speed and a high work rate. Jake White has said of him that he ‘oozes confidence’ and is ‘one of the best players on the team’. He was South Africa's Player of the Year in 2003.

Injuries:
Willemse returned home after fracturing his little toe in the second test of the 2004 European Tour.
He also injured his knee and ankle in a Springbok warm-up match ahead of Ireland's tour of the country in June last year, and consequently required surgery. The knee is the most common site of severe injury in rugby, comprising about a quarter of all serious damage. This injury took Willemse out of the game until recently, when an excellent rehabilitation programme and hard work paid off and allowed him a timeous recovery for the World Cup. Unfortunately, he fractured his liitle toe in the test against Ireland on 12 November, and has had to return to South Africa. He could be out of action for up to six weeks.
