Sport that can be continued into middle age may be a great way to ward off heart disease, new research says.
Sustainable sports the healthy choice Researchers from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, followed a group of over 1 000 young male medical students through to middle age and found that those students who preferred tennis were most likely to continue their sport as they aged.
The researchers concluded that sports like tennis, jogging or walking, are easier to maintain over the years which makes them a healthier choice.
"Sustainability of activity should be considered when developing physical education programmes for young adults," the researchers wrote in The American Journal of Medicine.
Golf doesn't count The researchers mentioned that unfortunately for many middle-aged men, golf is not linked to better heart health.
Although golf can be maintained throughout a lifetime, the sport is not aerobic enough to provide heart benefits, researchers say. – (Health24)
