A shocking 22% of rugby-playing schoolboys who took part in a survey conducted by Health24 admitted to taking illegal substances to improve their sports performance.
The boys admitted to using substances that contain one or more of the following illegal ingredients: prohormones, growth hormones, anabolic steroids, testosterone or natural anabolic steroids.

More than half of the boys who use these illegal substances indicated that their parents are aware of the fact.
A total of 318 schoolboys who play rugby took part in the recent instant survey by Health24.
The results of the survey were as follows:
44% of the boys indicated that they had never used any supplements or pills to improve their sports performance;
12% indicated that they had never used any substances containing creatine or illegal prohormones, growth hormones, anabolic steroids or testosterone. This group does however use vitamins and protein drinks.
23% indicated that they use creatine, but no illegal substances;
12% indicated that they use substances containing prohormones, growth hormones, testosterone or natural steroids – with the permission or tacit approval of their parents. According to the International Olympic Committee, all these substances are illegal.
10% indicated that they use substances containing prohormones, growth hormones, anabolic steroids, testosterone or natural anabolic steroids, but that their parents are not aware of the fact.
