As body type is such an important determinant of success in gymnastics (particularly for women) you should rather choose another sport if you are have a tall, large build, or do not have a good level of flexibility and co-ordination. This is also a sport that people generally enter into in childhood. The learning time is long when compared to most sports, and gymnasts peak young – women in their teens and men in their twenties The long time required to attain mastery of the fundamental skills requires a personality type that combines patience, perseverance, and passion for the sport.

Type of exercise needed
Gymnastics involves a variety of exercises, including sprinting, jumping, leaping, tumbling, handstands and twists. In addition to perfecting the technical aspects of routines, gymnasts do basic strength training repetitions as part of their training.

More about the basics
The flexibility required in gymnastics is one of the most remarkable aspects of the sport. Flexibility can be overdone, however, if a gymnast tries to increase range of motion when the body is in an awkward, unsafe position. Care must be taken to ensure gymnasts develop flexibility in appropriate postures, and that they progress gradually when developing new ranges of motion.
